Department Change

I just got an email saying that I'll actually be working in the Mother Baby Unit for my next rotation. The department selection had some problems, so now I'm ending up with my first choice!

School: the epitome of delayed gratification

Well school has definitely started. There's no avoiding that truth. I had my first physics problem sets today, and it made me realize that I am definitely not in school mode. It reminded me why I like summer session so much. It is a lot less stressful taking tests in small classrooms than PSLH where there are 400 students in the same building.

Anyways, today I got my assignment for my next rotation. Next up: Joint Works. I'm a little bummed I'll no longer be on MedPulm because I've really enjoyed it and I've become close to a lot of the PCAs. I'm hoping I enjoy Joint Works just as much because I am really interested in orthopedics. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Before physics I always wait with Charleen, Crystal, and some other rowers for the previous lecture to come out. Well they asked me if I wanted to be a coxswain because they don't have one yet. I'm going to go to a practice next week and try it out and see if I like it. I found my pictures and video from my second ankle arthroscopy today and it really made me miss cheer. Who knows.. maybe I'll enjoy rowing just as much. I've also realized that I should try getting back to being fit. Not losing weight or anything, but just getting toned and working out my joints.

After my second surgery my doctor said I would need the final (hopefully final) surgery around the time I turn 30 to deal with the cartilage chunk that I'm missing. Doctor King said that my cartilage was really bad (initial damage and scar tissue), and that it was really difficult to clean up because it was pretty intensive and because I have such a small ankle compared to what he was used to (he works for the SJ Sharks). The second problem was the missing cartilage becuase it is a large chunk especially for my age considering the tissues get worse with age. Anyways, the breakage left a jagged edge and over time it has worn down the talar dome. This obviously needs to be fixed at some point. For my second surgery we waited for a cadaver for a graft, but he didn't want my body to reject the cartilage, so he wanted me to wait. This means I have three options later: cadaver, cartilage taken from my knee, or a composite material. So we'll see what happens. I hope that I can avoid the last surgery, but we'll see..

I'm just going to end this with something I've been thinking about a lot lately: the future. The future stresses me out so much. I have $13,500 out in loans so far, and I'm hoping financial aid is better next year so my loans won't raise a lot. I highly doubt that though. I really wish I could look into a crystal ball and see what I'm going to be when I "grow up", like where I go to graduate/medical school, which field, where I'll be just so I could know what I should spend time and what I shouldn't. I guess that kind of defeats the purpose of life, though. Isn't that what life is, though? Figuring out what you want and going for it?

One thing that I do know is that along my journey I will have the people who have helped me through everything these past few years of my life. It's weird how the people that are closest to me are people I have met fairly recent (starting sophomore year of high school), well besides my family members.

I have my first midterm next week. It seems like the quarter system always comes and goes at the same time. In honor of my upcoming classics class, I'm posting a picture of my favorite character that we've learned about so far: Hera. I really wish I took the classics series first year. I would have definitely minored in classics, but now I won't have enough time.

New blog

I made a blog because kormsby (Kaelyn) wanted me to follow her! Let's see if I actually keep this updated. School just started and I'm only taking 12 units: Physics 3A, Classics 45A (The Gods), and Bio 100LW (Lab Writing). I'm also on the hunt for a job. After filling out a special circumstances form for financial aid, I'm getting ~$600 more per year. I'm glad that I get something, but I realize that loans and grants won't be enough for the quarter. Next weekend I'll find out what department I'll be working in next at Hoag. I requested 1. Mother and Baby unit, 2. Orthopedics, and 3. Rehabilitation. I've really enjoyed my rotation on Medpulm so far. I love getting to know new people each shift and hearing about all the experiences each person has had in their life. I'm hoping that I enjoy my next department just as much. Even if I am tired before my shift, I always go home happy and thankful for the things and people that I have in my life.
